guerrilla knitting

via birhobi.com

i was just trolling around this morning, and i found this.  definitely an arresting development in the ongoing craze for all kinds of granny chic.  we have a honda fit (not too much bigger than a smart car) and yesterday i bought a bunch of beautiful old granny square throws, some of which slightly fell to pieces when i washed them ... . possibly an exciting new project?! i'm sure the boys wouldn't mind driving a slightly improved honda fit -- ?!

i was taking a wander through my flickr favorites this evening -- i can get lost for hours; there are so many wonderful things to see and experience - i LOVE flickr -- and i noticed that patchwork and crochet of the most nostalgic kind kept showing up again and again. it's true that design is in a handmade sort of moment, a return, hopefully with longevity, to small batch, unusual, carefully, beautifully made things.
we're really celebrating this brave new world, and i rejoice. won't you join in?

Cuckoo clocks - Kuckucksuhren

Cuckoo clocks - Kuckucksuhren

we bought another old cuckoo clock yesterday - i think it's number five! - just at a charity shop, and it's just one of those 1960s or 1970s tourist-y things, but it's so sweet, with a little bluebird. cuckoo clocks are, i admit, a bit overexposed, but i do love them. is it the disney/heidi/ski-glam thing? or just a sincere longing for bambi-esque kitsch? don't know, but do love.

thanks to flickr member puppilottchen for this mosaic ~

a little closer, a little more saturated.

i got these recycled/reclaimed metal flowers from a bald guy wearing a hawaiian shirt and named elvis - no joke - at the atlanta market. he packed about a thousand of these into a truck and drove it to atlanta from benecia CA. i love the crazy fun people i meet in pursuit of interesting and fun deco things!

i spotted these in the storage room of one of my favorite country auction houses (warther's originals in walhalla SC) a couple of weeks ago; turns out, they were to be part of an estate auction this past weekend . . . so i telephone bid on them from the atlanta market, and i was thrilled to get them. - they don't really belong in the living room, but they're so perfectly girly - i love them; i'm just enjoying my little parisian fling for a day or two :)

thrifty fun for everyone i can drag along -

you've probably figured out by now that i am, along with any child of mine (or child's friend, or sibling, or my mum, or whomever else i can 'convince' or otherwise drag along) ALWAYS rummaging around everywhere i go for something(s) new/old, interesting, inspirational, cute, evocative, or otherwise not-to-be-passed-up.

this minor obsession generally results in great big piles of great stuff around our house.  i am, however, extremely lucky in that i have a shop to sell these goodies in, otherwise my family might just be calling the producers on that "help! i live with a hoarder!" show . . .

but seriously, how can people part with some of these things?  like, f'r instance, the cool pottery we've unearthed lately:

fun, huh?

you know how when you first notice something out there in the world, you think it must be very nearly unique, because it's so new to you?   well, that's how i felt about this tag sale mustard pot, which i bought for $1.  at home, i had my suspicions about its origins, and i did some quick internet sleuthing and discovered that it's in fact a 1972 scandia planter, by mccoy.  fair enough.  we're using it (temporarily) to hold bananas.

then, lo and behold, caroline and i were mooching about in a country antique mall last weekend, and we spotted the mustard planter's red vase cousin -- a bit pricey at $8, but we went for it anyway, and we're glad, as the two seem to be getting along quite nicely (see photo above) . . . and now, we're wondering what will show up next, as everyone knows good things come in threes -- at least, we hope so --

why don't you give it a try?  maybe you'll find the third cool pot -
